For a first-time pilgrim, Umrah becomes much easier to understand when the entire journey is seen as one clear sequence. The main stages are Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and shaving or trimming the hair.

This guide gives you the flow before you travel. For detailed fiqh questions specific to your circumstances, consult a qualified scholar.

What are the four main stages of Umrah?

The basic sequence is:

  • Enter Ihram before crossing the relevant Miqat.
  • Perform seven circuits of Tawaf around the Ka’bah.
  • Complete seven lengths of Sa’i between Safa and Marwah.
  • Finish with Halq or Taqsir, according to the established guidance.

Learning this sequence before departure means you can focus more on worship and less on remembering the next instruction.

How do you enter Ihram?

Ihram is the sacred state in which Umrah begins. Prepare before reaching the Miqat relevant to your route, make the intention at the appropriate time and begin the Talbiyah.

Men wear the prescribed Ihram garments. Women remain in appropriate modest clothing rather than adopting a special two-piece garment.

The practical lesson is simple: know your Miqat before travelling, especially if you are flying.

How is Tawaf performed?

Tawaf is performed around the Ka’bah seven times. Begin in alignment with Hajar al-Aswad, keep the Ka’bah to your left and move counterclockwise.

Each return to the starting alignment completes one circuit. Continue until seven circuits are complete.

Crowds can be dense. The aim is worship, not speed, so avoid pushing or creating harm in an attempt to reach a particular point.

How is Sa’i performed?

Sa’i begins at Safa and finishes at Marwah. Safa to Marwah counts as one length; the return to Safa counts as two. Continue until seven lengths are complete, with the seventh ending at Marwah.

Allah describes Safa and Marwah as among His symbols in Qur’an 2:158. Knowing the story of Hajar عليها السلام adds historical meaning to the movement.

How does Umrah end?

After completing Sa’i, men shave the head or shorten the hair. Women trim a small amount from the ends of their hair according to the established guidance.

With this step, the Umrah is completed and the pilgrim leaves the state of Ihram.

What should you memorise before Umrah?

Do not make your preparation depend on memorising a different dua for every round. Learn the Talbiyah, review the established supplications connected with specific moments and understand the sequence well enough that you are not constantly searching for what comes next.

The Pocket Guide combines the procedure, essential duas and visual references in a format designed for quick use during the journey.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Tawaf begin?

Tawaf begins in alignment with Hajar al-Aswad. Each return to that starting alignment completes one circuit.

Where does Sa’i begin and end?

Sa’i begins at Safa. Seven lengths are completed, with the final length ending at Marwah.

Is Ziyarat part of the Umrah procedure?

No. Historical visits can deepen your understanding of the Seerah, but they are separate from the rites of Umrah.

Learn the sequence before you travel. When the procedure is clear in your mind, you can give more attention to worship, reflection and the meaning of the journey.
